Disney sequel has Incredible weekend at box office
Incredibles 2 is the biggest animated film of all time at US box office
Disney•Pixar’s Incredibles 2 opened in the UK to rave reviews as the film took the UK box office crown this weekend with a three day total of £9.5M.
Fourteen years since The Incredibles first delighted audiences, the superhero sequel about the adventures of the Parr family by returning director Brad Bird has proved the wait was worth it as the film was the number one choice for cinema-goers this weekend.
Incredibles 2 opened strongly on Friday with £3m, making it Disney•Pixar’s second biggest opening Friday ever for an animated movie placed behind only Toy Story 3. Saturday’s figure of £3.425m and Sunday’s figure of £3m resulted in an impressive opening weekend total of £9.5m at the UK and Irish box office, ahead of school holidays starting next week.
Incredibles 2 is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the US, having surpassed the $520m mark domestically going in to this weekend and grossing a spectacular $812M globally to date in its first five weeks.
Lee Jury, Head of Studios UK at The Walt Disney Company said: “We are thrilled that Incredibles 2 has topped the UK box office. Together with breaking the record to become the biggest animated film of all time in the US. This is a remarkable achievement for director Brad Bird and the amazing team at Pixar. Critics and audiences alike have celebrated the return of the Parr Family as the extraordinary team of superheroes conquer the box office. What better way to make this amazing summer even more Incredible than offering cinema goers such a brilliant film to enjoy throughout the holidays.”
