Christmas bonus for Big Four
All top supermarkets see sales rises with Tesco on top as discounters continue to soar
Tesco saw sales jump 3.1 per cent higher in the key 12-week period over Christmas, according to reseacher Kantar Worldpanel, taking Britain's biggest supermarket above its other Big Four competition.
Asda sales increased by 2.2 per cent, while Morrisons and Sainsbury's saw a 2.1 per cent and 2 per cent sales boost respectively in the period to 31 December. Meanwhile, discount retailers Aldi and Lidl saw the biggest rise, both seeing 16.8 per cent more through the tills throughout the festive season.
This year's festive season was a particularly lucrative time across retail, with the Friday before the big day pegged as the "the busiest shopping day ever recorded" by Fraser McKevitt, Kantar Worldpanel's Head of Retail and Consumer Insight. More than £747m was spent on 22 December alone.
