Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens to £27.5m weekend - the UK's third biggest ever
Star Wars: The Last Jedi – the follow up to the biggest film of all time at the UK box office – has opened with blockbuster takings of £27.5m for the four-day weekend.
Opening in over 700 sites as the widest cinema release of all time, the four-day takings make it the biggest opening of the year – and the third biggest opening weekend of all time.
The UK was the largest international market for the latest in Disney's space saga. Saturday’s figures alone came in at £7.6M, meaning Disney has the top three all-time Saturday box office figures alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this year’s Beauty and the Beast.
The film, which has opened to global praise from critics, has taken over $450m worldwide and opened in the US to an estimated $220m, making it the second biggest opening of all time in America only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
